Utah Shakespeare Festival: Camelot

Image 1 TD Production Notes: The show of a thousand shields, Camelot had a number of repetitive construction items that all turned different tricks. The large full color shields (seen above the stage) were built to full-scale with curve to their form. The finish work was so well done, that they were later auctioned in a post-season fundraiser.

Image 2 TD Production Notes:  Each shield, on the diagonal rack of shields, was mounted on individual bearings. This allowed them to rotate and align as the unit articulated from diagonal to horizontal orientation via a small DC cable winch. Two trees were also built for this production using a construction method I learned during my production studio days. This involved framing the shape of the trees, covering them in hardware cloth, spraying them with AB insulation foam and Dryvit architectural finishing agent.

Image 3 TD Production Notes: For this stand, I engineered pneumatic wagon brakes with custom built, low profile air tanks that fit into the framing of double sided flats. Large racks of light weight shields also had to easily mount to these rolling units allowing them to be dressed on and off for unit versatility.
